our story
The Pantry at Roots Church can only be described as a community collaboration. We carry on the legacy of feeding neighbors that happened on the property before Roots took over the building. The former food pantry closed before Roots arrived and neighbors kept asking if we were going to re-open. As a new, small, young church we knew that we couldn’t do it on our own, so we put a simple ask out on the RP Neighbors Facebook Group: would anyone like to help us start it again? Our asks were simple:
1) it would be a client-choice pantry;
2) we would serve folks who live or work in Roeland Park;
and 3) any volunteers would need to be cool with our young LGBTQ & BIPOC-centered church.
TWENTY-FOUR people showed up to the first interest meeting—20 neighbors and 4 from Roots. From there, we have received help from incredible partners like the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection and Lowe’s, we’ve organized, and we’ve dreamed our way toward a neighbors-helping-neighbors ministry together.

The Pantry at Roots is FREE! We are committed to making it a full shopping experience for you and your family. We are open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm. We have canned and packaged foods, meat, fresh produce, and personal hygiene items available and open to everyone who lives, works, worships, or goes to school in Roeland Park.
First time shopper?
Welcome to The Pantry at Roots! We want your first experience shopping with us to be a great one, so we have provided important details below:
What to bring with you: Your ID, if you have it. If not, nothing!
Check in: Enter the main church building. You will fill out a 1-page information sheet for the first time at the Market. After that, the sign-in process is very simple.
IDs: We take IDs 1x year, and we look at the picture and your name.
Self-choice Market: We are a self-choice market, which means you get to shop and pick out all of your food and hygiene items yourself. You will get a grocery cart and will walk through the Market just like you do in a store.
How much do I get: You will get a certain number of points to use at The Market based on the size of your family. This typically ends up being 3-5 bags of groceries, or enough to feed your family for several days and up to one week.
How long does it take to shop? It takes 10 minutes to shop and check out once you get a cart. Enjoy breakfast in the community room at the church while you wait.
Community breakfast: We offer a warm breakfast while you wait to shop. Bring your family and neighbors and enjoy a meal together.
